In order to maintain or extend polymer properties, industries add numerous categories of chemicals called additives, to polymer formulations to improve polymers’ functionality or stability. These materials are chosen depending on the final properties and processing conditions. Some can improve processability while others may prolong the life span of the polymer. Additive can be added either during the polymerization process to modify polymer chain structures or be mixed with the base polymer to form a masterbatch and be processed accordingly. This group of chemicals can be classified as antioxidants, stabilizers, flame retardants, impact modifiers, plasticizers, scavenging agents, processing aids, colorants, blowing agents and many more, which are introduced in low percentage of the polymer content to the formulation and provide sufficient stability for several transformation steps.
